Antimicrobial Stewardship Collaborative of South Carolina seeks participants for study

CCME is providing recruitment support to the Antimicrobial Stewardship Collaborative of South Carolina (ASC-SC)'s study, "Impact of Asymptomatic Bacteriuria and Urinary Tract Antimicrobial Stewardship Bundle Intervention in Long-term Care Facilities." ASC-SC is funded through a CDC grant that the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC) received; partners include the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and College of Pharmacy.

This study is to determine if an antimicrobial stewardship bundle intervention focusing on urinary tract infections (UTIs) in long-term care facilities will impact appropriate treatment of UTIs. It is a multicenter, prospective, cluster randomized controlled trial. All facilities in the project will receive a nurse symptom documentation sheet and diagnostic algorithm for residents (with and without urinary catheters) with suspected UTIs to facilitate appropriate UTI diagnosis and documentation. Half of the participating facilities will be randomized to receive a comprehensive antimicrobial stewardship bundle, including the diagnostic algorithm, treatment algorithms for both cystitis and pyelonephritis, education materials, and staff education. At the end of the initial study period, the other half of the participating facilities will also receive the full comprehensive antimicrobial stewardship bundle. The primary endpoint is total antibiotic use per 1000 days present.
