Canada: Early Removal of Unnecessary Urinary Catheters

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in Toronto was the first hospital in Canada to ‘lose the tube’ and to make transfusion protocol ‘bloody easy’. These initiatives resulted in 50% fewer urinary catheters on the medical wards sustained beyond 1-year, as well reducing monthly RBC usage by 29%, both without any adverse effects.
